Subject: POWER-SHARING DEALS ARE A THREAT TO DEMOCRACY IN A
Content: Democracy is uNder threat in Africa. A new trend has emerged which threatens to kill the infant multi-party democracy that Africans had clamoured for, for a long time. It started in Kenya. Elections were held and the results disputed. What then happened was that the Western countries put pressure for a power-sharing deal in which Kibaki retained the Presidency and Raila became Prime Minister. This was nothing than a shortterm solution anyway. Now there is a real danger that this might just spread to other African countries. Zimbabwe has already gone the same route. What is to stop other African couyntries from doing the same? What may result is that every president will claim to have won. And if he wins fairly, the Opposition will cry foul, in the knowledge that the international community will just call for a negotiated power-sharing deal. And this is the real fear. Then we have a problem of two centers of power. If we go back and look at the history of Africa, you will see that there was a time when we had both President and Prime Minister, to appease certain interests. This was the case with the Democratic Republic of Congo. And it was the same with Uganda and Zimbabwe, among others. In the DRC, Africa produced Mobutu. In Uganda Africa gave birth to Idd Amin, and in Zimbabwe, Mugabe simply removed the President, changed the Constitution and named himself President, from Prime Minister. And we can now see what he has done to Zimbabwe. Are we seeing another circle of deposed Presidents by their Prime Ministers? Is this what the West has in mind? GOD SAVE AFRICA! LET HISTORY NOT REPEAT ITSELF.
