Title: AFRICAN UNITY
Tags:
Blog Entry: African countries have been searching for the elusive unity, that could see them form one Government. African leaders met in Nairobi in February, to work out the modalities of having a common currency. This in itself, could experience problems, taking into consideration the economic performance of many African countries. Libyan President Kaddafi has been in the forefront in calling for a United Africa. But how this will be chieved is another matter. Many countries have internal conflicts related to ethnic considerations. Some leaders are unlikely to accept the possibility of ceding power and authority to some other person, other than themselves. The other issue could be languages to use. Should Africa use the same colonial languages, meaning French and English, including Portuguese and Arabic or use an indigenous language? Which would it be? And how would be the African President be elected? Where would the Headquarters be based? Kwame Nkruma, Jomo Kenyatta, Haille Selassie, Julius Nyerere may have started the whole debate on African Unity, but it will be quite a while before this dream is realised. There simply is too much mistrust between the African countries.
